Football might not be the most important thing in the world, but it is a significant source of comfort for some people who suffer with mental health issues.
Jürgen Klopp was right when he penned an open letter to supporters emphasizing that football pales in comparison to protecting the most vulnerable among us in the face of a global pandemic.
His message was one urging care and togetherness, as he asked each of us to “put [our] health first. Don’t take any risk. Think about the most vulnerable in society and act where possible with compassion for them.”
This message resonated with many, and underscored how Klopp’s values align so seamlessly with those of many Liverpool supporters.
As discussed by others on this site, togetherness and a sense of community is at the heart of watching football, and despite the differences that must exist in such a diverse and far-reaching global fanbase, there exists a strong belief in looking out for each other whenever we can.
This belief is evident in many different moments and contexts, and can look like donating food banks on matchdays or raising funds for a cause at your local supporters’ bar.
However it’s enacted, looking to help the vulnerable is intrinsically tied to many fans’ matchday traditions, and thus Klopp’s letter framed the league’s decision as one fans should collectively believe in.
